Hello, I'm Matthew, one of the librarians of Madison College Libraries, where we help you find, access, and evaluate the information you need for your assignments. This tutorial provides an overview of many of the services and resources we offer students, especially those of you who are taking courses online. (Graphics: Library logo and photo of a librarian). Slide 3 - Libraries Traditional. Traditionally, libraries were merely a physical destination where you went to find materials for research assignments. Although that's still true of Madison College Libraries, we also offer access to a wealth of electronic materials that allow for substantial academic research from anywhere you can access the internet. On the 'Books/AV' tab, select advanced search to add more control to our search for books. This will open up a separate database, where you will find the book's contents. To read from the work, click the link 'eBook Full Text'. To get started, select a database, such as Opposing Viewpoints, which offers differing opinions on the controversial subjects of today. (Graphic: Opposing Viewpoints home page) Slide 34 - Search Function - Opposing Viewpoints. : When we begin to type our search term, in this case 'cyberbullying', the database suggested topics as we type, much in the way that web search engines often do. When our search results appear, we often have hundreds or even thousands of results from well-known, trusted publications. From here, you can decided to print, email or save the articles that best address your topic. Most of our databases even provide help creating a citation for you and some even offer text-to speech for those with reading disabilities or visual impairments. In addition to research guides, we have a Reference and Research Help page designed to guide your web research towards more reliable and authoritative online source material. At the top of the page you will find links to help with citing your sources, plus a link to Credo Reference, which provides online access to more than 500 specialized reference books on academic topics. Slide 56 - Research Guuides and Ref. : A bit further down you can again link to our research guides, several reference databases on topics from anatomy and literature to auto repair. Plus, we link to some good websites that indentify trusted web sites on given topics. Between these web sources, e-books, Films on Demand, and database sources, your online research options are plentiful.
